Similar Letters — Avoiding Confusion

الحروف المتشابهة

Master the letters that look alike but sound different. Confusing similar Arabic letters is one of the most common mistakes in Quran recitation.

Several Arabic letters share the same base shape but differ by the number and position of dots. Confusing these letters changes the meaning of Quran verses — making this one of the most important lessons in Noorani Qaida.

Groups of Similar Letters

Group 1 — Ba, Ta, Tha

Same base shape (a small curve)

  • ب — ONE dot BELOW the letter

Critical Warning

Confusing similar letters in Quran recitation is a major error. For example: reading ض as ظ or ص as س changes the meaning of the verse. Always verify with your teacher until each letter is fully mastered.
