Wudu (ablution) is a condition for prayer. Learn the correct way to perform Wudu according to the Quran and authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
— Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:6)
Follow these steps in order. Each step should be performed with the intention of purifying yourself for prayer.
These actions are compulsory. If any is missed, Wudu is invalid.
From the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. Water must reach all parts of the face.
Start from fingertips, ensure water reaches the entire arm including the elbows.
Wipe the entire head with wet hands, from forehead to nape and back.
Start from toes, ensure water reaches the entire foot including between toes and the ankles.
These are recommended. Following them brings extra reward.
Say "Bismillah" before starting Wudu.
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times before washing the mouth.
Rinse the mouth with water three times.
Sniff water into the nostrils and blow it out three times.
Wash each body part three times (except wiping the head).
Wipe inside and outside of both ears with wet fingers.
Pass wet fingers through the beard if you have one.
Interlace fingers and use the little finger to pass between toes.
Follow the sequence as mentioned in the Quran (face → hands → head → feet).
Perform actions without long pauses to allow parts to dry before completing.
Recommended supplications to recite.
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ — "I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger."
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ — "O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves."
After performing Wudu, reflect on Allah's command to purify yourself before standing in prayer. Wudu washes away minor sins along with physical impurities.
Your Wudu is broken and needs to be renewed if any of these occur.
Urine, stool, and passing gas (from the front or back passage).
Sleeping while lying down or leaning such that one loses awareness.
Fainting, intoxication, or any state of unconsciousness.
Touching the private parts directly with the palm or inner fingers without a barrier.
According to the Hanbali school; consult your madhab for details.
Avoid these common errors to ensure your Wudu is valid.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used a small amount of water (approximately 1-2 mugs). Wasting water is disliked even when using running water.
Water must reach between fingers and toes. Simply letting water run without passing the fingers is not sufficient.
Many people miss the top part of the elbow and the ankle bone. These areas must be completely washed.
Masah (wiping) of the head is not just splashing. Use wet hands to wipe the entire head.
Though speaking does not invalidate Wudu, the sunnah is to remain silent and focused.
Wiping the neck during Wudu has no basis in authentic hadith and is not part of the sunnah.
