Compound Letters — Joining Arabic Letters

الحروف المركبة

Learn how Arabic letters join together to form syllables and words. Master initial, middle, and final forms with real word examples.

In Arabic, most letters connect to each other to form words — just like cursive writing. Letters change their shape depending on whether they appear at the start, middle, or end of a word. Learning these connections is the key to reading Quran fluently.

The Four Positions

Every Arabic letter has up to 4 forms: (1) Isolated — standing alone, (2) Initial — at the start of a word, (3) Medial — in the middle of a word, (4) Final — at the end of a word.

Non-Connecting Letters in Words

When a non-connecting letter (أ د ذ ر ز و) appears in the middle of a word, the word splits visually into two parts. Example: كَتَبَ — but مَدْرَسَةٌ has a د and ر that break the flow.
