If you are planning to perform Qurbani this Eid ul Adha, Islam teaches an important Sunnah regarding cutting hair and nails during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. In this detailed guide, learn the authentic Hadith, scholarly explanation, and spiritual wisdom behind this practice in both English and Urdu.
If you are planning to perform Qurbani (Udhiya) this Eid ul Adha, then you should avoid cutting your hair and nails from the beginning of Dhul Hijjah until your Qurbani has been completed.
According to expected moon sighting, this may begin after sunset on 17 May depending on your country.
“When the ten days (of Dhul Hijjah) begin and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him not remove anything from his hair or nails until he has offered the sacrifice.”
— Sahih Muslim
Scholars explain that this is a Sunnah practice for the person who intends to perform Qurbani. During the blessed first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims increase in worship, sacrifice, remembrance of Allah, fasting, charity, and good deeds.
This ruling applies to the person offering Qurbani. If someone cuts their hair or nails by mistake, their Qurbani is still valid.
May Allah accept our Qurbani and عبادات. Ameen.
